Windshield Long Crack Repair:
Windshield Repair Instructions:
Repairs should be completed as soon after damage has occurred as possible
to avoid allowing contaminants to get into the cavities and cracks of
the damage especially waxes, soaps, and oils which could cause adhesion
difficulties. The windshield should be shaded from direct sunlight until
the entire repair is complete.
A successful repair is achieved when the repair resin has completely penetrated
the crack, and the crack is not visible when examined at a 45 degree angle
from the side of the crack. Poor results are achieved when the repair
resin is applied too quickly, leaving air pockets, or when the repair
is attempted on a contaminated crack.
The repair process may not be successful:
-
On cracks over 12 inches long.
-
For crack that extend to or near the edge of the windshield in two or
more places.
-
If the crack is in the inner layer of glass.
Note: the optimal windshield temperature for most repair resins is
between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, 10°C to 32°C. Temperatures outside
this range on the low side will cause the resins to be too thick and cure
or flow too slowly where temperatures above this range may cause the resin
to cure too quickly.
Caution: it is important that the resin not come in contact with painted
surfaces or any finished surface on the car as it could cause damage to
the surface.
